The Arapaima Conservation Program at Rewa Eco Lodge is a community project in Guyana’s North Rupununi wetlands focused on protecting and sustainably managing the Arapaima gigas, the world’s largest scaled freshwater fish.
In partnership with the indigenous Makushi community, the visitor experience blends traditional knowledge with modern science to safeguard the iconic species. Visitors join guided catch-and-release tagging excursions that contribute to the long term population, monitoring and regional conservation strategies.
Visitors can also participate in the Yupukari River Turtle Conservation Project, a community led approach that protects the yellow-spotted Amazon River turtle. Combining indigenous knowledge and scientific research, the project focuses on conservation, education and sustainable livelihoods from its base Caiman House Eco Lodge and Yupukari Village in the Central Rupununi region.
Both experiences take four to five hours.
