There’s no longer any excuse to skip Georgetown on your way to the natural wonders of Guyana’s rainforest and savannah.

Slowly but surely transforming itself into a worthwhile urban destination, Guyana’s capital city is rolling out intriguing new places to sleep and eat.

The city’s first designer-savvy digs, the Aiden Hotel opened in August in central Georgetown. And what a location: just a few blocks from Burda Market and the Botanical Gardens, the Georgetown Cricket Club and the National Gallery of Art.

A brand-new beacon on the Georgetown skyline (especially at night when the high-rise hotel is fully illuminated), the Aiden offers a lobby restaurant, open-air rooftop bar with killer city views, and a state-of-art gym to complement its 138 rooms.

Among Georgetown’s other new overnight options are the three-star King's Hotel & Residences near the Promenade Gardens and St. George’s Cathedral and the soon-to-open, four-star Bel Air Hotel near the Botanical Gardens.

Nikkei is the hot new place to dine in Georgetown. Located in the same building as the popular Altitude bar on Sandy Babb Street, this blend of Asian and South American culinary delights features dishes like traditional Peruvian ceviche, steamed pork bao buns, lomo saltado, sushi rolls, pollo anticucho, and cassava ice cream. Plus, a full bar with wine, beer and creative cocktails.

Another eatery raising the bar on Georgetown dining is Amici, which opened in 2022 on a rooftop high above Church Street and the cricket club. With both indoor and al fresco dining, the Italian restaurant offers a wide range of Mediterranean fare from prawn gourmet pizzas and seafood pasta to veal ossobuco, chicken piccata, and calamari fritti.
