Home to the three camps of the Garonga Safari Co., the Greater Makalali Private Nature Reserve has long been at the forefront of elephant conservation.

The reserve welcomed its first elephant families in the mid-1990s, introduced as intact family units in a pioneering move that helped re-establish healthy populations. Since 2000,  the Greater Makalali has also been home to Africa’s first and longest-running non-lethal elephant immunocontraception program.

Elephants are true architects of the landscape. Each day, they can consume up over 100kg of vegetation, breaking branches and pushing over trees to reach nutrient-rich leaves and bark – and in the process, they open pathways through dense bush for countless other species.

Located just north of Hoedspruit and not far from Kruger National Park in South Africa’s Limpopo Province, the reserve also boasts the rest of the “Big Five” of African wildlife as well as cheetahs, wild dogs, hyenas, hippos, crocodiles and an abundance of birdlife.

Each of three wilderness outposts — Garonga Safari Camp, Little Garonga and  Garonga MCH Luxury Tented Camp — offer a unique atmosphere while maintaining a luxurious safari experience, aligned with company ethos “Safari for the Soul.”
