Whether you prefer photographing the sunrise or sunset, beach life or starry skies, wildlife above or below the waves… here are the 5 best beaches for photography in Sierra Leone!

River No. 2

The beach at River No.2 was chosen as the location of a Bounty TV commercial in the 1980s. And when you get there, you’ll see why, because this shore is nothing short of paradise. It’s a swath of pure white sand where a river meets the sea, creating the lagoon.

Black Johnson Beach

Wild beach lovers, this one’s for you! This strand takes its name from the darker color of its sand, caused by its mineral content. The beach is lined with palm trees, lending it that iconic tropical look. The fact that it’s really quiet makes it even easier to capture beautiful pictures.

Lumley Beach

Lumley won’t win any awards as Sierra Leone’s most beautiful beach, but it’s definitely the best stretch of coast in Sierra Leone for street photography. Come on a Sunday afternoon you’re your camera and take your pick of people playing beach sports or other activities, street vendors, or the crowds at popular beach bars. And the sunsets are stunning!

Turtle Islands

These small islands are a hidden paradise of pristine white beaches leading down to crystal clear Atlantic Ocean waters. It takes several hours to reach the Turtles by boat from Freetown, but you’ll be rewarded with colorful sunrises, sunsets, and starry skies like you’ve never seen before — with no one else around!

Tokeh Beach

Tokeh comes a close second to River No.2 for the title of best beach near Freetown. The strand is wide and sandy, and it’s a stunning sunset location, especially when the sun dips behind Tokeh Island.
