One of South Africa’s top private wildlife reserves, Garonga is constantly looking at ways of conserving fauna and flora. Here are a couple of the programs and processes already in place:
Every guest room at Garonga Safari Camp and Little Garonga have hot water supplied by heat pumps. They work splendidly and certainly cut the amount of energy being used. MCH Luxury Tented Camp uses gas geysers, which are also extremely effective and economical.
A water plant cleans, softens and filters water from natural boreholes, while a water filtration plant cleans and filters “grey” water that is then pumped down back into the waterholes for the wildlife to drink.
Garonga also creates its own bottled drinking water, served in glass bottles to eliminate the need for plastic. Meanwhile, harvester tanks are used to collect rainwater that can be used for irrigation, cleaning vehicles, etc.
Front of the house at Safari Camp and MCH are totally solar. All waste is separated and recorded daily to see how Garonga can improve, and which departments are wasting unnecessarily. Firewood is carefully selected from dead trees that have fallen and broken up.
