What’s beyond the Big Five of African wildlife? Read on to discover two more iconic species that you can see while staying at Mara Siana Camp.

Located in the 13,500-acre Ripoi Conservancy on the northeast side of Kenya’s fabled Masai Mara region, the camp is well placed to witness the Great Migration that swings through in July and August as well as resident animals that call the reserve home year-round.

During morning and later afternoon or early evening game drives, Mara Siana guests often spot elephants, lions, leopards, rhino and buffalo — the so-called Big Five because those are the animals that big game hunters prized the most on shooting safaris in the early 20th century.

But the conservancy also supports two other apex predators — cheetahs and African wild dogs — who modern “shooters” (of the photograph variety) prize even more than the Big Five because they appear much less often.

There are also those who “clean up” after the big cats and wild dogs finish their feasts: spotted hyenas and black-backed jackals, vultures and marabou storks.
