Reykjavik’s Hot Springs Valley

January 17, 2022 - 1 minute read

Hotel Island is located in one of the Icelandic capital’s most intriguing neighborhoods, a place called Laugardalur (“Hot Springs Valley”) that has morphed from a place where locals used to wash their clothes (because of the permanent hot water) into the city’s recreation haven.

Hotel guests have a range of outdoor activities to choose from including a world-class gym with yoga, spinning and other classes, the Reykjavik Zoo and botanical garden, a large public swimming pool, sand volleyball, fencing, Parkour workout course, ice skating and ice hockey.

Small and intimate, Reykjavik Zoo blends typical Icelandic farm animals and wild polar region beasts like reindeer, Arctic foxes, mink and seals. There’s a great reptile house as well as an expansive playground with pirate ship and miniature Volvo construction machines that kids can operate.

Grasagarður Reykjavíkur botanical garden cultivates more than 3,000 plant species in eight different collections that reflect the incredible diversity of vegetation in the polar and subpolar zones. The garden hosts a variety of events each summer including free 30-minute guided tours in English every Friday in June, July and August. Located in the main greenhouse, Flóran Café is open between May and August with treats made with ingredients grown in the garden
