The South Rupununi is Guyana’s answer to the Wild West, a region has spawned some of the world’s largest and oldest cattle ranches. Much of the vaquero (cowboy) culture has survived into modern times, and visitors can be a part of it.

Those who vacation at one of the working ranches can saddle up and help the vaqueros round up cattle on horseback, clean and feed the animals, and pitch in with other ranch chores. You can also join an authentic trail drive as the ranches herd their stock to the famous Easter rodeo in Lethem.

A unique consortium of ranches and community lodges spread over an area of 6,000 square miles, Rupununi Trails offers an 11-day guided “Rodeo Trail Drive” tour that includes ranch meals and accommodation, riding across the open savannah for as much as 30 miles per day and watching rodeo events like bull riding, steer wrestling, calf roping, bronco riding, and barrel racing.
