The Wildlife Conservation Society recently reported that the country’s elephant population has increased significantly in recent years. According to a report on the eTurbonews website, the pachyderm populous has risen from a low of 700-800 individuals in the 1980s to more than 5,000 today thanks to improved protection, creation of the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), together with support from the government, donors and conservation partners.

Uganda is also making news in the world of goats. In case you missed it, the BBC reported on the Royal Ascot Goat Races at Speke Resort & Conference Centre on the shores of Lake Victoria. Modeled after the Royal Ascot horserace in England, the races benefit local charities like the Kampala Kids League and Salama School for the Blind. The race is normally held in early September.
