It depends on who you ask, but there’s a general consensus that winter is a wonderful time to safari in the South African bush.

During the winter months, the vegetation thins out and spotting wildlife lurking in the bushes becomes significantly easier. Although the animals do their best to overcome this advantage by cunningly camouflaging into the landscape. A lion’s hue is almost identical to the grass while the gray of tree bark disguises elephants in an uncanny way.

What makes winter so special for many of those who chose to safari at Garonga is the lighting. The early morning sun summons scenes of startling beauty and during the late afternoon the animals are bathed in a beautiful golden glow.

Winter is undoubtedly the best time of year to test out Garonga’s other activities. Hopping into a star bath or bush bath when you return from an evening game drive is a very welcome treat, the hot water chasing away the evening chill (a far cry from hot sticky summer nights) while the stars create an unrivalled view for your relaxation.

The quintessential Garonga sleepout is marvelous in the winter. Because the sleep-out deck is situated on an elevated point, warm air rises and settles around the deck, making the winter temperatures very comfortable indeed. To keep you cozy, they equip the sleep-out beds with a sumptuous duvet and extra blankets that banish even the most persistent winter chills.
