Romantic destinations in Greece to visit with your sweet Valentine
February 13, 2023 - 5 minutes readCan you think of a better place for a romantic getaway than Greece, where the god of love was born? It is the ultimate choice if you are seeking the perfect setting for romantic moments with your better half that will turn into unforgettable memories! I have gathered my top 5 romantic destinations to visit with your partner on Valentine’s Day, and any other day for that matter.
- SANTORINI
Santorini is without question THE epitome of a couples getaway in the Mediterranean. It has everything a couple could ask for, including fine dining restaurants, uncountable stunning accommodation options with private pools and spa facilities, more than 20 wineries for an exceptional wine tasting. You can also do village- hopping or charter a yacht and go see the famous volcano up close, or head to Akrotiri to visit the Bronze Age settlement of Akrotiri. And all that away from the crowds of other travelers.
NOT TO MISS: A glass of sweet Vinsanto, to celebrate your love while watching the world famous sunset.
- ATHENS
Steeped in over 3,400 years of history, Greece’s historical capital needs no introduction. With the UNESCO world heritage site of the Acropolis, countless museums and art galleries, Michelin star restaurants slipping seamlessly alongside tavernas and traditional eateries, Athens is the perfect destination to spend some days as a couple. Stroll around the narrow streets of Plaka or visit the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center for a unique walk by the canal to admire the spectacular water show of the Dancing Fountains!
NOT TO MISS: A drive along the Athenian Riviera to capture one of the most exquisite sunsets in the world at Cape Sounion.
- NAFPLIO
Only a two-hour drive away from Athens, Nafplio, the historic town in the Peloponnese with a charming Old town awaits you. With its medieval castles, monuments and statues, Ottoman fountains and Venetian or neoclassical buildings, it came as no surprise that CNN regards it one of Europe’s most beautiful towns, while Booking.com named it as one of the planet’s top ten destinations for outstanding hospitality last year. Make the most of your stay by visiting the nearby archeological site of Mycenae, the most important and richest palatial center of the Late Bronze Age in Greece. Indulge in a delicious lunch at a lovely restaurant downtown Nafplio and taste some local delicacies or enjoy a memorable wine tasting at the nearby Skouras Domaine.
NOT TO MISS: a bike ride along the coast facing the Argolic Gulf
- MONEMVASIA
Often referred to as for love birds, Monemvasia, a mesmerizing medieval castle town is one of my top romantic getaways. With its stone-paved alleys void of cars will make you feel like entering a fairy tale. From the castle’s upper part enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the fortress while at the town’s lower part, you’ll come across tiny shops, traditional homes and boutique hotels overlooking the Sea and affording panoramic views of the castle. Enjoy a romantic dinner on the rooftop of a tower and let yourself free in the magic of the moment.
NOT TO MISS: An uplifting spa treatment with your better half at Kinstarna 5* boutique hotel, offering organic treatments based on natural products, such as olive oil, honey and grapes.
- THESSALONIKI
If you’re a food lover couple then we have you covered. Opt for Thessaloniki, Greece’s food capital, designated by UNESCO as a City of Gastronomy. Whether you choose a high-end restaurant, a modern bistro, offering contemporary twists on century-old recipes, a traditional little taverna, or just a snack whilst enjoying a walk, you are sure to be completely satisfied. Excellent fish and seafood dishes are accompanied by the strongly-flavored Macedonian wines. Succulent salads and imaginative desserts complete a perfect meal.
NOT TO MISS: the newly restored Modiano Market, the city’s landmark with 75 shops, stalls and eateries.
