Chimps in the Mist
July 3, 2023 - 1 minute readLocated just a 40-minute drive from Freetown’s city center, the world renowned Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary is tucked away in the dense forests of Sierra Leone’s Western Area National Park.
However, this 100-acre reserve for rescued and rehabilitated orphaned chimpanzees is much more than a sanctuary, as visitors will come to discover when they embark on one of the one-hour daily guided tours.
Visitors will learn all about the sanctuary’s founder, Bala Amarasekaran, who abandoned his career as an accountant to establish the sanctuary in 1995 with advice from Dr. Jane Goodall, as well as the community outreach to secure the future of wild chimpanzees in Sierra Leone.
It’s also possible to stay overnight in one of the beautiful self-catering ecolodges set deep inside the forest. These rustic retreats range from traditional roundhouses to treehouse lodges. They sleep two to four guests each and include ensuite bathrooms and balconies or patios that open onto the forest.
