Four Ways to Discover Northern Portugal
September 17, 2023 - 1 minute readNorthern Portugal offers four distinct regions — Porto, the Douro, Minho and Trás-os-Montes — with their own experiences, encounters and adventures.
Porto
Some say that the North of Portugal begins in Porto, others say that it ends there. Either way, the nation’s second largest city welcomes everything and everyone. Whether you come for history or modernity, river or sea, work and pleasure, it’s a never-ending party.
Douro Valley
Portugal’s foremost wine region accentuates the pure, primitive and overwhelming beauty of this unique region. Feel the immensity of the open sky over the valley. Follow the flexures of the slopes, like green origami cut outs. And breathe the aged aroma of the valley’s legendary vintages.
Minho
Visitors to Minho are usually surprised by the vast palette of hues. It starts with the aquamarine that paints the coastline, mottled here and there by the mint-green of serpentine algae and continues inland with jade-colored vineyards, forests lined with the purest emerald-green and hills framed by moss-green granite cliffs.
Trás-os-Montes
Portugal’s wildest treasure, Trás-os-Montes offers the aroma of chestnuts and smoked meat, the sweetness of honey and paths are sprinkled with almond blossoms. Everything is extreme in this part of northern Portugal: climate, flavors, history, landscapes and experiences. Knowing Trás-os-Montes is getting to the root of what is Portuguese.
