Do You Know Boterismo?

November 5, 2023 - 1 minute read

Named for legendary Colombian painter and sculptor Fernando Botero, Boterismo is the artistic style characterized by satire, humor and objects with exaggerate proportions and features.

A symbol of Colombian cultural identity, Boterismo often reflects daily life and customs mixed with politics, criticism of inequality and corruption, among other things.

More than 200 of his works are display at the Botero Museum in Bogotá, 116 at the Antioquia Museum in Medellín, and 23 sculptures in the Plaza de Botero in Medellín. In addition, there is a sculpture honoring the artist in the Plaza Santo Domingo in Cartagena.

Botero was born in Medellín in 1932 and lived in several countries including Spain, Mexico, France, Italy, and the United States. Among his most recognized works are Man on Horseback, A Family, Horse, The Hand and Mona Lisa, Age 12 (an interpretation of Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous painting in Botero’s characteristic style).
