Freetown Off-the-Beaten Path
June 16, 2024 - 2 minutes readFor most people visiting Sierra Leone, Freetown is the first port of call. Trouble is, most guides cover the same sights — Lumley Beach, the (sadly fallen) Cotton Tree, the Sierra Leone Museum, Big Market and a few others.
But there’s lots more to see and do around the capital city including these five activitit3es for those who like to wander off the beaten path:
Walk the Portuguese Steps
There’s nothing “Portuguese” about these steps, built in 1818 by the British colonizers and one of the oldest structures in Freetown. At the top is a cool view of Freetown and its harbor below.
Hike Leicester Peak
A must-do activity for outdoor lovers wanting to escape the busy city center. It takes 40 minutes to reach the summit following an urban trail that starts near the American Embassy.
Visit the National Railway Museum
This offbeat museum showcases the history of Sierra Leone’s railway system through vintage locomotives, historic photographs, and memorabilia dating back to the colonial era — including a carriage built especially for Queen Elizabeth’s visit.
Explore Bunce Island
Learn about Sierra Leone’s dark past with a day trip to Bunce Island, which served as a major trading post during the transatlantic slave trade and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Relax at Lakka Beach
Skip busy Lumley and unwind at offbeat Lakka Beach and a stretch of golden sand with great swimming and sunbathing, as well as snorkeling and beachside picnics.
