Curious about what you should eat in Iceland. Try some are all of these local culinary specialties.

Rye bread ice cream

Delicious vanilla ice cream with dried rye breadcrumbs mixed and topped with whipped cream.

Pylsur hot dog

This local favorite comes in lamb, pork and beef versions, served in a bun with an array of condiments and toppings. An inexpensive snack sold from stalls in Reykjavik and at gas stations all over the country.

Icelandic chocolate

The island boasts several wonderful chocolate shops. Be on the lookout for Omnom, an award-winning chocolate produced in Reykjavik from organic cacao beans and Iceland milk.

Fermented shark

Definitely an acquired taste. But worth at least a small taste for those who want to try one of Iceland’s most traditional (and pungent) dishes.

Skyr

A thick, creamy Icelandic delicacy that has been nourishing Icelanders for nearly 1,000 years. It’s similar to yogurt but has a different texture thanks to the heirloom Icelandic cultures used to make it. It takes four cups of milk to make just one cup of Skyr.
