GOT Climate Change? Google and Greenland Do
March 29, 2017 - 1 minute readGame of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has joined forces with Google Maps to document and publicize how climate change is impacting Greenland.
In a recent blog and video, the Danish-born actor and United Nations Goodwill Ambassador teamed up with the Google Street View team to collect images of the island’s changing landscapes, where the effects of global warming can be seen firsthand.
“Our final stop is the majestic glacial-covered Qoorog Fjord, where the second largest ice sheet in the world terminates into the sea,” Nikolaj writes in his report. “The ice sheet is melting at an increased pace—pouring 300 billion tons of ice into the ocean each year. This melting harms important coastal ecosystems, local food and water supplies and is a major contribution to rising sea levels.”
The issue takes on extra special meaning for Nikolaj because he’s married to a native Greenlander — Sascha Nukaka Motzfeld (a.k.a. Nukâka) — a celebrated singer, actor and former Miss Greenland.
