Six Ways to Explore Torres del Paine

Horseback Riding to Lake Nordenskjöld
Situated at the base of the Paine Massif, this famous lake is named after Otto Nordenskjöld (1869-1928), a Swedish-Finnish explorer who dedicated himself to the study of the Antarctic, Greenland, Chile, and Peru.

Leaving from Pesebrera, the excursion follows the famous “W” Trail, passing along the lake’s north shores beneath Mount Almirante Nieto with plenty of opportunity take in the awesome views and unique Patagonian fauna and flora. The rides are led by genuine baqueanos (Patagonian gauchos).

Hiking to Torres Base
Trek the park’s main trail to a famous viewpoint situated on the shores of Lake Grey, from where you can observe the slender, granite peaks that give the national park its name. The excursion starts from Hotel las Torres and includes the Ascencio Valley and a beautiful lenga tree forest before traversing a rocky glacial moraine (La Morrena) and finishing at the spectacular Torres Base Viewpoint.

Climbing at Puma Cave
Located close to Hotel Las Torres, Puma Cave is a large rock formation with magnificent climbing walls that reach three levels of difficulty — basic (beginners), medium and expert. Starting with an comprehensive orientation and instruction, this activity lasts for two or three hours. Plenty of time to try different routes.

Cruising Lake Grey
This excursion through the heart of the park includes stops at magnificent viewpoints and short hikes to must-see sites, as well as the possibility of cruising across the lake to see Grey Glacier. Among the sight along the way are Black Bridge, Lake Nordenskjöld, Sarmiento Viewpoint, Lake Pehoé, and Salto Grande.

After an exquisite picnic, you’ll have the opportunity to walk along the shore of Lake Grey to view icebergs that have fallen off the glacier, which descends from the vast Southern Ice Field. The day concludes with a scenic catamaran cruise around the lake, including a close-up look at the famous glacier.
