Declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013 by UNESCO, vallenato is a traditional Colombian musical genre that originated during the first half of the 19th century along the Caribbean coast.
A blend of African and Indigenous rhythms with instruments such as the guacharaca and the European accordion, vallenato songs are inspired by memories and experiences. It’s even got its own category (Cumbia-Vallenato) in the annual Latin Grammy Awards.
Since 1968, the best composers and performers have come together in the Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata in Valledupar, the capital of the Department of Cesar. The festival includes competitions to determine the best exponents of the genre in four categories: Children, Youth, Amateur and Professional. There are also art exhibits, gastronomy shows, parades and additional singing, poetry, and dancing competitions.
